Swedish lighting designer Palle Palmé has designed the lighting scheme for an Estonian production of Miss Saigon using 36 of Martin’s new MAC 2000 Wash fixtures.
”I really want to give my regards to Martin for making such a wonderful washlight,” Palle comments. “It’s incredibly bright with fantastic color mixing and beautiful colors that are very even on the color wheel. It has a fantastic UV-filter, which I am using for a UV-scene – we didn’t even have to put up our real UV-lamps, the 2000 Wash did the job.
It also has a fantastic zoom-field – all the way from almost an ACL-beam up to a full Fresnel frost.” Palle has also incorporated 24 MAC 2000 Profiles into the show.
Miss Saigon opened on November 2nd at Linnhall in Tallinn and runs until December 15th. The production is huge, as is Linnhall, with a stage approximately 30 by 20 meters and room for up to 4,500 people.
“I’m not using any conventional lights at all,” says Palle. “I really depend 100% on the MAC 2000s. The washes are the real workhorse in the show – I use them as
both frontlights, sidelights and backlights. The big advantage with them is the big zoom. I can go in from the front with a very small beam just to highlight a small area, and the next second I can wash the whole stage with the widest zoom.”
Lighting company Eventech of Tallinn has supplied all the Martin fixtures. “Eventech is the main supplier of both lights and sound for this show and their investment in the new MACs is fantastic. Several other new and big musicals are coming up in Estonia in a near future and Eventech are really up for these kinds of productions. Especially Sass Kartul has been a big help for me in this production.”
